The Four-Armed Avalokitesvara and the Symbolism of Her Four Hands
The four arms of AvalokiteSvara (Guanyin) symbolize the four different
powers and functions of the Bodhisattva:
First Hand Holding the Purification Vase: The vase holds nectar,
symbolizing the cleansing of all troubles, sins, and sufferings. The nectar
inside has the power to nourish all beings, liberating them from their
hardships and granting purity and peace.

Second Hand Holding a Willow Branch: The willow branch symbolizes
gentleness and healing. lt is used to dispel the sickness and suffering of
beings, offering them hope and comfort.

Third Hand Making the Wish-Fulfilling Mudra: This hand gesture signifies
the fulfillment of wishes, showing that Avalokitesvara is willing to listen to
the wishes of beings and offer them compassion and assistance.Through
this mudra, the Bodhisattva demonstrates a heart of great compassion-
rescuing all beings in suffering.
Fourth Hand Holding the Dharma Wheel: The Dharma Wheel represents
the teachings of the Buddha, symbolizing the spread of Buddhist wisdom
and the end of the cycle of reincarnation. The hand holding the Dharma
Wheel signifies Avalokitesvara’s role in spreading the Dharma, helping
beings to break free from the suffering of samsara.

The Story of the Four-Armed Avalokitesvara
In an ancient legend, there was a kind and beloved king who won the
affection of his people. However, during a battle, he led his army to defeat
the enemy but lost many warriors in the process. The cruelty of war and
the death of his soldiers left the king in deep sorrow. In search of
redemption, the king began to seek ways to relieve the suffering of his
people. He knelt before AvalokiteSvara, praying for the Bodhisattva to help
him eliminate his inner pain.

Sensing the king’s sorrow, Avalokite'vara manifested in the form of four
arms, extending four hands to the king, bestowing upon him pure water,
healing, wisdom, and magical power. This helped the king calm his pain
and brought hope and peace to his people. From that day on, the king, with
the compassion and power of Avalokitesvara, became a more benevolent
and wise ruler.

The Four-Armed Avalokitesvara and the Main Buddha
In Buddhist tradition, especially in some mystical Eastern cultures, each
person has a "main Buddha" associated with their destiny based on factors
like their birth chart. The Four-Armed Avalokitesvara, as one of the main
Buddhas, is believed to offer special protection and blessings to followers.
By venerating the Four-Armed Avalokite'vara, followers place their wishes
and prayers, hoping to receive the Bodhisattva's compassionate
protection.

The Four-Armed Avalokitesvara is believed to possess infinite power,
capable of helping followers eliminate worries, relieve illness, dispel
disasters, and help them find inner peace and wisdom in life. Her image is
not just a religious symbol but also a spiritual protector.
